Northern Valley Demarest High School Leaders
to Honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on January 16

Student leaders from Northern Valley Demarest High School will come together to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 16 from 1:00 to 3:00pm. Although the student body has the day off, these leaders will participate in a unique program. The highlight of the assembly will be personal remarks by Sean James, former NFL player, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and activist.
Mr. James played high school football at Hutchinson High School, in Hutchinson, Kansas; graduated from Missouri Southern State University in 1991; received his MBA from George Washington University; and played his professional football career as an undrafted free agent with the Minnesota Vikings. In 2007, James founded "Sean James Student Athletes" (SJSA), a nonprofit organization in New York City providing scholarships for underprivileged youth. In 2012, he founded "Be in The Know," an anti-bullying program centered on the philosophy that students can make a meaningful impact on preventing bullying in their schools through leadership, education, and the use of positive mentors.

In August, Peer Mentors (100+) began the Student Leadership Academy, while Team Captains, Club Leaders and other select individuals (60+) started Lead with PRIDE. Both leadership development programs are facilitated by Randy Nathan (aka Coach Randy), President of Project NextGen. "Leadership skills are now an essential component of the higher education admission process. Northern Valley Demarest recognizes that need and is providing the professional training for these high school students," says Nathan. "Honoring Dr. King," Nathan continues, "offers these students an opportunity to reflect on his remarkable accomplishments, learn from an inspirational leader (Mr. Sean James), while simultaneously implementing the leadership skills they are learning."

Assistant Principal, Luisella Marolda, is excited for this portion of the leadership training as well. "Each leadership group has a core group of leaders who are organizing various social action projects within the community." The Student Leadership Academy is collecting various items for the Center for Food Action for New Jersey (CFA), while the Lead with PRIDE groups will be working with the Northern Valley Coalition to streamline efforts regarding community events such as a homecoming and movie night.

There will be boxes in the lobby each morning, the week of January 11th. The following items have been requested by CFA:
Toothpaste, toothbrushes and dental floss
Bar or Bottled Soap
Baby Formula and Diapers
100% Juice
