Old Tappan, NJ, July 9, 2024 – Northern Valley Regional High School District is excited to announce it has been awarded the “Expanding Computer Science High School Courses” grant from the New Jersey Department of Education. This esteemed grant, aimed at broadening and enhancing computer science education across the state, will enable the district to implement an innovative new course titled “Artificial Intelligence and Interactive Technologies” in the 2024-2025 school year.

This grant underscores Northern Valley Regional High School District’s continued commitment to offering students a forward-thinking and cutting-edge educational experience. Already recognized for its robust computer science program, which includes College Board-approved Advanced Placement (AP) Computer Science A and AP Computer Science Principles courses, Northern Valley Regional High School District will utilize the grant to introduce a brand new course: “Artificial Intelligence and Interactive Technologies.” This course represents the next frontier in computer science education, merging advanced concepts in artificial intelligence with 3D design, spatial computing, and advanced physics.

“We’re honored to receive this grant to expand our advanced offerings in computer science,” said James Santana, Superintendent of Northern Valley Regional High School District. “As part of our efforts to empower our students to innovate and lead, we look forward to providing our students with a truly unique, hands-on, and cutting-edge new course that integrates both AI and new, interactive technologies.” 

The “Expanding Computer Science High School Courses” grant is designed to support local education agencies in developing and implementing high-quality computer science education courses that align with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards in Computer Science (NJSLS-CS). Northern Valley Regional High School District’s focus on artificial intelligence and interactive technologies aligns with Governor Murphy’s “AI Moonshot” initiative, which establishes New Jersey as a hub for AI-powered discoveries, driving economic opportunities and creating jobs in emerging industries.
